I’m so very happy to be spotlighting my friend and fellow indie author, Adam Dreece. Join me as we celebrate today’s release of the fourth installment of The Yellow Hoods series.
The fourth installment of the rollercoaster steampunk-meets-fairytale world of Adam Dreece’s The Yellow Hoods arrives Saturday, October 10.
The “powerhouse of Young Adult fiction” continues the tale of the smart, strong heroine Tee and her friends with Beauties of The Beast, in an adventure science fiction author Luther Siler calls “The most exciting and action-packed installment of The Yellow Hoods yet.”
Dreece has been busy on the convention circuit, and brought some advance copies of “Beauties” to Edmonton’s Comic and Entertainment Expo in September. He was amazed at the response. “I couldn’t believe how many people came hunting for me, hoping or having heard that Book Four might be there. We went in with a hundred copies. We came out with nine.”
And he’s already planning for 2016 events. “Everyone was asking if I’ll have something new in April, at Calgary’s Comic and Entertainment Expo – like I have for the past two years.” He smiles. “They’re not going to be disappointed.”
Actor Garrett Wang (Ensign Kim, series regular, Star Trek Voyager) stopped by to say hello during EdmntonExpo, and is an enthusiastic admirer of the books. “I just finished Book Two,” he says. “If books One and Two are any indication of what’s to come, Book Four should be something to behold.”
“A Young Adult novelist who deserves to be recognized as a top writer in the YA genre.” — Jess Alter, author, The Dome Trilogy
Less than two years after publication, Dreece has landed on the Calgary Herald bestseller list twice; the first two novels – Along Came a Wolf and Breadcrumb Trail – were finalists in the 2015 Independent Author Network’s Book of the Year awards. Reviewers on Goodreads said The Yellow Hoods was “like discovering the Harry Potter of technology before everyone else”.
The story follows Tee, Elly and Richey – three friends living in a pre-industrial society on the verge of a technological revolution. Their journey is a story about friendship, courage, family and loyalty as they unravel and face dangerous and determined foes in a rapidly changing world around them. Woven into the fabric of the story are fairytales made real – master inventors in their twilight years like Christophe Creangle and Nikolas – plus a secret society called The Tub, which is led by a butcher, a baker, and a candlestick maker. It’s a fun, fast-paced adventure emphasizing teamwork and family connections as well as empowerment and self-esteem – and a vibrant female character taking the lead in the action.
“For years, I read stories to my daughter where the female characters were either pretty pink princesses, or extreme tomboys; there was nothing in the middle,” recalls Dreece, a proud husband and father of three. “The Yellow Hoods brings all the amazing women I’ve had in my life into my realm, while keeping it as appealing to boys as well as girls.”
The October 10 launch of “Beauties” will be from 12:00 to 1:30 pm at Indigo, featuring local music duo Hazel Grey, whose unique vibrancy and storytelling are brought to life in with the rich sounds of guitar, live instruments with combined vocals and harmonies. A book signing follows the launch until 4pm.
Dreece has been busy with appearances on the convention circuit as well as a vigorous book signing tour; he appeared at When Words Collide in August and at Saskatoon’s Comic and Entertainment Expo (SaskExpo) in addition to Edmonton, where he led workshops on writing and indie publishing. He’ll also be a guest at the upcoming KelownaExpo in October and LethbridgeExpo in November.
